A Surprise for the Con Artists Behind the Elderly Lady
The swindlers were delighted when a frail ninetyyearold woman opened the door for them. Yet, just behind her, a massive dog called Gaston emerged
Sophie Marceau was certainly old, but still very much in touch with modern life. At ninety, she kept in contact with her grandchildren via Skype and paid her bills online. Why waste time standing in line at the post office? she would say.
She had buried her husband twelve years earlier. The only companion left was an equally aged dog, Gastona quirky name her late husband had chosen. Every morning and evening, neighbors saw Sophie strolling slowly, a cane in one hand and Gastons leash in the other. The leash was mainly a reassurance; despite his formidable size, Gaston had never bitten anyone, even in his younger days.
Sophie knew that lonely seniors were prime targets for fraudsters. First, her grandchildren warned her. Then the local precinct chief mentioned it. She also read several online articles. A few months back, a friend called in tears, describing how she had been swindled out of her savings.
So, when the doorbell rang, Sophie was cautious. Two twentysomething youthsone male, one femalestood on her doorstep, claiming to work for social services.
I didnt ask for anyone, Sophie snapped, her gaze sharp.
Its us who came to you, the boy grinned broadly. Tell me, did you buy anything at the pharmacy last month?
Of course, Sophie replied, chuckling. At my age I visit the pharmacy as often as the grocery store! Ninety isnt a joke! She could list her purchases and their effects for hours.
The youngsters were uninterested in her anecdotes.
Youre eligible for a state compensation! Its a new government program. Let us in, pull out your receipts, and well verify everything, the girl suggested.
Sophie smiled inwardly. She recognized the trick: strangers entering to distract while the other rummages through the house.
The pair stepped into the living room, and the girl asked Sophie to accompany her to the kitchen for a glass of water.
Certainly, dear! And you, young man, Gaston will keep you company, Sophie replied with a smile.
At that moment, Gaston, alert despite his age, entered the room. His imposing stature still commanded attention.
Sophie and the girl left the room, and Gaston slowly approached the boy, fixing him with an intense stare.
Try to search the house and Ill bite your head off, the dog seemed to warn. The youth froze.
Unsurprisingly, after that intimidating welcome, the duo remembered an urgent matter and hurried toward the exit.
And that medication compensation? Sophie asked, a mischievous grin on her face.
Well get back to you, the girl stammered, rushing out.
Sophie saw the visitors off with a stern look, shut the door, patted Gaston, and called the police to report the fake social agents.
