A man is forced to give up his dog because he cannot afford to save him.
An elderly man brought his pet to be euthanised, lacking the means to keep his companion alive. Witnessing the man’s tears and the animals sorrow, the vet made the only sensible choice
People say happiness doesnt depend on money, yet sometimes it is money that decides our fate. The old man had not a cent when the doctors presented the bill to rescue his fourlegged friend.
In the veterinary office, silence hung heavy. The veterinarian watched the pair: a frail dog lying on the table and its owner, bent over him, absentmindedly stroking his ear. The only sounds were the dogs labored breathing and the mans muffled sobs. The old man could not bear to lose his friend and wept.
Antoine Martin, a young vet, had often seen such raw emotion during animal euthanasia. It was understandablepeople form deep bonds with their furry companions. Yet this case felt different to Antoine.
He recalled the first time he saw the duo at his door, three days earlier. A quiet old man had arrived with his nineyearold dog, Baptiste, needing urgent attention. The dog hadnt moved for two days, and the elderly owner was deeply worried. As he explained, apart from Baptiste, he had no one else.
Antoine examined the dog and confirmed a severe infection that required costly, immediate treatment; without it, the animal would die in excruciating pain. Then, the vet had said bluntly, if you cant afford treatment, euthanasia is the humane option. Antoine could now imagine the mans feelings that day, though at the time he had no clue.
Following the vets advice, the old man placed his crumpled coins and bills on the tablethe payment for the procedure. He took Baptiste in his arms and left. He returned later, saying, Forgive me, doctor, I could only gather enough for euthanasia, his eyes downcast.
Now, when the old man asked for five more minutes to say goodbye, Antoine watched the pair and wondered why the world seemed so unfair. Often the wealthy treat every living being without regard, while a penniless old man and his dying dog overflowed with feeling.
A lump rose in the young vets throat. He placed his hand on the mans shoulder. Ill treat him, he whispered, trembling, Ill pay for Baptistes care myself. Hes not that old yet; he can still run. Antoine felt the old mans shoulders shake with silent sobs beneath his palm.
A week later, Baptiste stood steadily on his legs. The infusions and proper care had worked. The young doctor felt joy. Perhaps he had performed a small kindness for a desperate old man and his mixedbreed dog, but in truth it was a deed of great compassion.
Thankfully, there are still sensitive and generous people in the world.
