My Mum Asked for a Paternity Test, and We Agreed, Even Though I Never Doubted That Katie Was My Daughter

Im James Bennett, thirtyseven, and for most of my life Ive had everything I thought I wanteda steady job, a decent flat in Manchester, a solid education. Yet one thing was always missing: a family of my own. Six years ago my father passed away, and I moved back into the twobedroom flat I share with my mother, hoping to honour her wishes and avoid disappointing her.

She always dreamed of the day Id announce Id found a partner, so she could start doting on grandchildren. After finishing a respectable degree in engineering and landing a job at a local firm, I finally felt ready to follow my heart. Thats when I met Emily, a young woman from a nearby village who was still studying at university. Her background was modest, but that never mattered to me. My mother, however, was quick to dismiss her, saying Emily wasnt the sort of woman I should be with.

I ignored her objections and began seeing Emily. A few months later I brought her home and told my mother we were moving in together and that she was pregnant with my child. My mother was convinced Emily was merely using me to stay in the city. Despite her disapproval, Emily moved in, and over time my mother, though reluctant at first, grew accustomed to her. Emily proved herself a wonderful housekeeper, and the household settled into a comfortable rhythm, even if my mother occasionally tried to stir up trouble.

When our daughter was born, we named her Rowena. My mother then asked for a paternity test. I agreed without hesitation; I never doubted that Rowena was my child. The test confirmed my paternity, yet my mother still refused to accept Emily as part of the family. She even suggested I should end things with Emily and give Rowena to her.

I was furious. I packed my things, took Emily and Rowena, and left my mothers flat. Since then I have kept contact with her to a minimum, believing her actions were selfish and dismissive of my feelings. It pains me that she could not welcome Emily as a member of our family, but I will not compromise my own principles for her disapproval.

Lesson learned: you cannot force anyone to love what they choose to love; the only respect you can demand is for yourself and the people you willingly keep close.
