My Mum Asked Me to Take a Paternity Test, and We Agreed, Even Though I’ve Never Doubted That Caterina is My Daughter

Dear Diary,

Mum asked me to have a paternity test, and I agreed, even though I never doubted that little Eleanor was my daughter.

My name is Victor Thompson, thirtyseven years old. Ive always had everything I wanteda decent career, a roof over my headbut I was missing one thing: a family of my own. Six years ago my father passed away, and since then Ive been sharing a twobedroom flat in Birmingham with my mother. I never wanted to let Mum down or fall short of her expectations, so I chose a respectable university course, landed a stable job, and made her proud. Shes been waiting for the day Id tell her Id found a partner, so she could start doting on her grandchildren.

A few years back I met a girl named Amelia. Shed moved here from a small village in Norfolk while still studying. Her family wasnt wealthy, but that never mattered to me. Mum, however, was vocal about her disapproval, saying Amelia wasnt right for me. For the first time I followed my heart, and we began seeing each other. After several months I brought her home, told Mum we were moving in together, and mentioned that she was pregnant with my child. My mother thought Amelia was only staying in the city out of a scheme.

Despite Mums objections, Amelia moved in, and Mum, though reluctant at first, eventually tolerated her. Amelia proved herself a wonderful housekeeper; Mum seemed to settle down, though she still tried, in her own way, to stir up trouble between us.

When Eleanor was born, Mum insisted on a paternity test. I consented, even though I was certain she was mine. The results confirmed my paternity, yet Mum still refused to accept Amelia as part of our family. She even suggested I should split from Amelia and hand the baby over to her.

I was furious. I packed my things and left Mums flat with Amelia and little Eleanor. Since then I keep to a minimum with my mother, convinced shes selfish and indifferent to my feelings. It hurts that she couldnt welcome Amelia into our lives, but I wont compromise on that.

Victor.

Running Late! In just three minutes, she dashes into the bathroom, applies her makeup, slips on her coat and boots, and then grabs the lift.
