A Surprise for the Swindlers Behind the Old Lady
The fraudsters were thrilled when a frail ninetyyearold woman opened the door for them. Yet, just behind her, a massive dog called Gaston appeared
Sophie Marceau was certainly elderly, but she kept up with the times. At ninety she chatted with her grandchildren on Skype and settled her bills online. Why waste my time queuing at the post office? she would remark.
She had buried her husband twelve years earlier. Only the companionship of an equally aged dog, Gastonan odd name her late husband had chosenbrightened her days. Every morning and evening the neighbours saw Sophie walking slowly, a cane in one hand and Gastons leash in the other. The leash was mainly for reassurance, since Gaston had never bitten anyone despite his impressive stature, especially in his youth.
Naturally, Sophie knew that solitary seniors were prime targets for scammers. First her grandchildren warned her, then the local precinct chief, and later she read articles on the subject. A few months earlier a friend had called her in tears, describing how she had been swindled out of her savings.
So when the doorbell rang, Sophie was cautious. Two twentysomething youths stood on her doorstepa boy and a girlclaiming to work for social services.
I didnt request anyone, Sophie said, eyes sharp.
Were the ones who came, the boy replied with a broad grin. Tell me, did you purchase anything at the pharmacy last month?
Of course I did. At my age I go to the pharmacy as often as the grocery store! Ninety isnt a joke! Sophie answered, ready to list her purchases and their effects for hours.
Clearly that didnt interest the youngsters.
Youre eligible for a state compensation! Its a new government program. Let us in, bring your receipts, and well verify everything, the girl suggested.
Sophie smiled inwardly. She recognized the ploy: strangers enter, one distracts while the other rummages through the house.
Thats exactly what happened. The pair stepped into the living room, and the girl asked Sophie to accompany her to the kitchen for a glass of water.
Certainly, dear! And you, young man, Gaston will keep you company, Sophie said with a grin.
At that moment Gaston, roused but alert to strangers, entered. Despite his advanced age, his imposing presence was intimidating.
Sophie and the girl left the room. Gaston slowly approached the boy, staring him down.
Try to snoop and Ill bite your head off, seemed to say the dog. The youth didnt dare move.
Unsurprisingly, after that reception the duo suddenly remembered an urgent matter and hurried out.
And this medication compensation? Sophie asked with a mischievous smile.
Well get back to you, the girl stammered, rushing toward the door.
Sophie watched the visitors leave with a stern glance, shut the door, petted Gaston, and called the police to report the fake social agents.
