A Surprise for the Scammers Behind the Elderly Lady
The fraudsters were thrilled when the door swung open for them by a frail, ninetyyearold woman. Yet, immediately after her, a massive dog named Gaston appeared
Sophie Marceau was certainly old, but she kept up with the times. At ninety, she chatted with her grandchildren on Skype and paid her bills online. Why waste my time standing in line at the post office? she would say.
She had lost her husband twelve years earlier. The only companion left was an equally aged dog, Gastona quirky name her late spouse had chosen. Every morning and evening, neighborhood residents saw Sophie strolling slowly, a cane in one hand and Gastons leash in the other. The leash was mainly a reassurance; despite his intimidating size, Gaston had never bitten anyone, even in his younger days.
Sophie knew all too well that seniors living alone were prime targets for con artists. Her grandchildren had warned her first, followed by the local precinct chief, and later she read numerous online articles. A few months prior, a friend called her in tears, recounting how she had been swindled out of her savings.
So when the doorbell rang, Sophie was wary. Two twentysomethingsone boy, one girlstood on her porch, claiming to work for social services.
I didnt ask for anyone, Sophie retorted, her gaze sharp.
Were the ones here for you, the boy grinned widely. Tell me, did you buy anything at the pharmacy last month?
Of course, Sophie replied, proud of her age. At ninety I shop at the pharmacy as often as the grocery store! I could list my purchases and their effects for hours.
The youngsters seemed uninterested.
Youre eligible for a state compensation program, the girl said. Its a new government measure. Let us in, pull out your receipts, and well verify everything.
Sophie smiled inwardly; she recognized the trickstrangers entering, one distracting while the other rummages through the house.
Exactly that happened. The pair stepped into the living room, and the girl asked Sophie to accompany her to the kitchen for a glass of water.
Sure thing, dear! Sophie replied. And as for you, young man, Gaston will keep you company.
At that moment, Gaston, alert despite his age, entered the scene. His imposing stature still commanded respect.
Sophie and the girl left the room, and Gaston slowly approached the boy, fixing him with an intense stare.
Try to snoop and Ill bite your head off, seemed to say the dog. The youngster didnt dare move.
Naturally, faced with that warning, the duo suddenly remembered an urgent matter and hurried out.
And the medication compensation? Sophie asked, a mischievous grin on her face.
Well get back to you, the girl stammered, making a beeline for the door.
Sophie watched the departing pair with a stern look, shut the door, praised Gaston, and called the police to report the socalled social agents.
