A Surprise for the Swindlers Behind the Elderly Woman
The con artists were delighted when a frail ninetyyearold lady opened the door for them. Yet, just behind her, a massive dog named Gaston appeared
Sophie Marceau was certainly old, but still very much of her time. At ninety, she kept in touch with her grandchildren through Skype and paid her bills online. Why waste my time standing in line at the post office? she would say.
She had lost her husband twelve years earlier. The only company she had was an equally aged dog, Gastonthe odd name her late husband had chosenwho brightened her days. Each morning and evening, neighborhood residents saw Sophie strolling slowly, a cane in one hand and Gastons leash in the other. The leash was mainly for reassurance, as Gaston, despite his formidable size in younger years, had never bitten anyone.
Naturally, Sophie knew that seniors living alone were frequent targets for fraudsters. First, her grandchildren warned her. Then the local precinct chief. Later, she read articles online. A few months back, a friend called in tears, recounting how she had been swindled out of her savings.
So when the doorbell rang, Sophie was wary. Two people in their twenties stood therea young man and a young womanclaiming to work for social services.
I didnt ask for anyone, Sophie said, her gaze sharp.
Its us who have come to you, the boy grinned broadly. Tell me, did you buy anything at the pharmacy last month?
Well of course. At my age I go to the pharmacy as often as the grocery store! Ninety isnt a joke! Sophie replied, able to list her purchases and their effects for hours.
Clearly, that didnt interest the youngsters.
Youre eligible for a state compensation! Its a new government measure. Let us in, fetch your receipts, and well verify everything, the girl suggested.
Sophie smiled inwardly. She recognized the trick: strangers entering, one distracting while the other rummages through the house.
Thats exactly what happened. The pair stepped into the living room, and the girl asked Sophie to join her in the kitchen for a glass of water.
Of course, dear! And you, young man, Gaston will keep you company, Sophie said with a smile.
At that moment, Gaston, awakened but alert to the presence of strangers, made his entrance. Despite his advanced age, his imposing stature still commanded attention.
Sophie and the girl left the room. Gaston slowly approached the young man, staring him down.
Try to snoop and Ill bite your head off, seemed to be the dogs warning. The man didnt dare move.
Unsurprisingly, after that reception, the duo claimed an emergency and hurried out.
And this medication compensation? Sophie asked with a mischievous grin.
Well get back to you, the girl stammered, rushing toward the door.
Sophie watched the departing visitors with a stern look, shut the door, praised Gaston, and called the police to report the supposed social agents.
